There's a version of real estate that gets marketed to you from the outside.
Everybody's posting “Just Sold” signs. Everybody's hitting six figures. Everybody seems to be winning. And if you're like I was a few years ago sitting at the bank trying to figure out a way out, that version looks really, really good.
But the reality is that for probably 80-85% of agents, that's not what's actually happening.
I spent 4 years with my license active, working the buyer and rental side of the market here in Philly, building my own brand, trying to figure out how to make it sustainable. I always told myself that next year would be the one, and kept chasing a fantasy I had built in my head.
This week's episode is the honest debrief.
Not a trash-the-industry episode. Not a woe-is-me episode. Just a real look at what I learned, what I'd do differently, and why I'm making a pivot now.
A few of the lessons that actually stuck:
The gap between having a license and actually having a business is bigger than anyone tells you going in.
Doing the sales and the marketing at the same time as a solo operator will eventually break one of them. There's just not enough of you to run both engines hot at once.
Tying your identity to what you do keeps you stuck way longer than it should. If you think leaving the thing means you failed at the thing, you'll keep hanging on to something that stopped working a long time ago.
And here's the one that's been sitting with me the most.
The content marketing quietly worked the whole time. Even when the agent work wasn't producing, people were still reaching out from videos I posted months ago. That's the proof of concept that pointed me to what I'm building now.
Four years is enough data for me. Time to move.

Thank you for listening, and as always... enjoy your first sip! ☕
P.S. Quick ask. - I'm looking to partner with a few more business owners and service professionals over the next couple months. If marketing has been the thing you keep meaning to figure out, reply and tell me where you're stuck. We'll talk and see if it's a good fit.
